LEARNING

Teaching a kid how to sing intoned

A simple exercise... to the good of all

My son, then 10, liked very much to sing in the club videoke. The problem was that he was very dissonant, sometimes this really incomodated us. I asked to myself: what can be done?

I had an idea. I picked the guitar and called him to a joke. We would choose a song, I would play the first accord of the song's harmony and he would have to start singing the song. If he sang in the right tone, he would win 10 cents, otherwise I would. And so we did with several songs and tones.

After that, he indeed started to become better; each time we went to the club, he was more intoned.

My interpretation of what happened is that, from the experience with the joke, the kid started a learning cycle that consists of:

- hear his own voice when singing;

- compare what he listens with the instruments;

- adjust his voice until it combines with the instruments.

Once the strategy is installed, the more the practice, the more the learning, until it becomes automatic. And in this case all of us won!
